We expect all students on the university payroll—fellows, RAs, or TAs—to use all available tuition remission each semester. Fellows have 12 credits of remission and assistants have 10.

First and Second Year Students

You will typically register for 3 courses (9 credits) per semester. You should use your remaining credits on Econ 898 (pre-candidacy research). If you register for only two courses in a particular semester, please register for additional credits of 898. The department will allocate your 898 registration in your first two years.

Students In the Third Year and Beyond Who Have Not Advanced To Candidacy

You may still have classroom course requirements to fulfill. If you are taking 3 courses, use your remaining credit on 898. If you are taking 2 courses, use your remaining 4 credits on a brownbag workshop (708 or 709) and on an 800-level workshop appropriate to your field. If you are taking 1 course, use your remaining 7 credits on a brownbag workshop, and 800-level workshop, and three credits of 898. If taking no courses, register for a brownbag workshop, and 800-level workshop, and six credits of 898.

The department will allocate your credits of 898 in the fall semester of your third year. Starting in the spring of your third year, register for 898 with your primary dissertation advisor (the chair of your dissertation committee if you have one, or the faculty person you speak to most frequently otherwise). If you have 2 advisors who are equally important, register with one of them one semester, and the other the next.

Students Who Have Advanced to Candidacy

You will automatically be registered for 6 credits of Econ 899 (post-candidacy research). Use your remaining 4 credits on a brownbag workshop and an 800-level workshop. Allocate your credits of 899 to your primary research advisor(s) as described above.
