Spring 2020 Commencement


COVID-19 update: Per direction from the University of Maryland's Office of the President, there will not be an in-person ceremony for Spring 2020. Alternative options are currently being discussed. More information will be posted soon


Campus-Wide Ceremony

Tickets are required for the campus-wide ceremony and only those students who are completing all degree requirements this semester may receive tickets to attend. For more information regarding ticket distribution visit https://umd.edu/commencement/tickets.

Department of Economics Ceremony
Date: Thursday, May 21st
Time: 8:00 AM
Location: Xfinity Center


Tickets & Guests

Tickets are not required for the departmental ceremony and students may bring as many guests as they would like. Students are not required to RSVP. Doors will open for guests at 7:00 AM and guests should enter the Xfinity Center through Gates A, B, E, or F.

Student Arrival Time & Location

  • Undergraduate & Masters Students: Enter the Xfinity Center through Gates C or D.  Assemble in regalia at 7:15 AM in the Pavilion (auxiliary gym) located inside the lower level of the Xfinity Center. Check-in with a graduation marshal to obtain your name card and get line-up/processional information.
  • PhD Students: Enter the Xfinity Center through Gates C or D. Assemble in regalia at 7:15 AM in the Media Room. Volunteers will be on hand to direct you to the Media Room.

Important Venue Information

There will be a bag check for all students and guests upon entering the Xfinity Center. We ask that everyone avoid bringing bags or limit the amount and size of bags in order to expedite entry for everyone. Please note that the following items are prohibited in the Xfinity Center: strollers, backpacks, and balloons. Free parking will be available in any surface lot or parking garage on campus. Parking closest to the Xfinity Center is available in the Terrapin Trail Garage (Lot 6), Lot 4B, or Lot 9B.  Shuttle service from the College Park Metro station will also be available from 7 AM until 10 PM. Parking for guests with disabilities is located in the Terrapin Trail Garage (Lot 6) next to the Xfinity Center. Level 2 has a ramp leading directly to Gate E where you can enter Xfinity Center.

Once inside the Xfinity Center, staff will help direct elderly or disabled guests who cannot climb stairs to the designated seating area on the Concourse level (level 3) above sections 120 and 121. Due to limited space, we ask that only one family member sit with the guest in this seating section and that additional family members sit in the nearby sections. Volunteers will be on hand to help guests find seating that best fits their needs.

If you have difficulty walking long distances, you may wish to make arrangements to bring your own wheelchair for the day. The University cannot provide wheelchairs.

Academic Regalia

In order to participate in either commencement ceremony, undergraduate and master's degree students must purchase academic regalia at the University Book Center. The following items are required and sold as a package: 

  • Cap
  • Gown
  • Departmental hood (BA hood has a white velvet trim, BS hood has gold. MS hood also has gold velvet trim)
  • Stole of gratitude
  • Tassel with official medallion

The undergraduate package will cost $109 and the master's degree package will cost $158. Sales will begin at the University Book Center's Grad Fair being held on March 10th -12th from 10am - 6pm. If you are unable to attend Grad Fair, you can still visit the University Book Center up until May 20th to purchase your regalia however orders must be placed by April 15th to guarantee the correct style/size is still available for you. Online ordering will also be available beginning March 10th at https://umdcollegepark.shopoakhalli.com.  If you have questions regarding regalia orders, contact Deddisun Won at UBC directly (dwon1 [at] umd [dot] edu or 301-405-9478).

Doctoral students may rent or buy their regalia. The cost to rent regalia is $230 and the cost to purchase regalia is $1,098. To order or rent regalia visit the University Book Center by April 15th. Note that if you choose to rent your regalia, it must be picked up from the book center as shipping is not available. 

Active duty military can wear their dress uniforms instead of regalia.


GradImages will take photographs of each graduate participating in the ECON commencement ceremony. While there is no obligation to purchase the prints, graduates will receive access to the color proofs by email approximately two weeks after commencement along with ordering information. Additional Information for ECON Ceremony

  • The ceremony will last approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours.
  • Graduates:
    • You will be standing a long time. You will also be walking across a stage with lots of people watching you. Wear comfortable shoes.
    • Please don’t bring items like a book bag or purse with you. You won’t have any place to store them and regalia does not come with pockets.
    • You will not receive your diploma at Commencement. Diplomas are mailed to students several weeks after commencement once all final grades have been reviewed and graduation clearances are completed.
