In addition to major requirements, all University of Maryland students are required to complete certain general education requirements. Students entering the University of Maryland (including freshmen and students transferring from private institutions and from non-Maryland public institutions) beginning in Fall 2012 are subject to the University's new General Education (Gen Ed) program requirements.
Students who entered the University of Maryland prior to Fall 2012 and those transfer students from a Maryland public institution, will continue to follow the university's CORE requirements.
Please note that some (not all) major requirements may overlap with CORE or Gen Ed requirements. Below are courses that satisfy ECON major requirements in addition to CORE or Gen Ed:
- ECON 200 and ECON 201 also fulfill the Gen Ed: History and Social Science or CORE: Social Science requirements.
- Calculus (MATH220 or MATH140) also fulfills the Gen Ed: Analytic Reasoning or CORE: Math Science requirement.
- ECON 375 which may be used as a Supporting Course also double counts as a CORE: Diversity requirement.
If students have any questions regarding Gen Ed or CORE requirements they must meet with a BSOS College Advisor.
