ECON Course Restrictions & Permission to Register

Declared ECON Majors

There are several instances where students need to request electronic permission to register for an ECON class before you can add the class to your schedule.

  • ECON-BA Students
    • 400 level BA courses with 'Permission of BSOS-Economics Department' Restriction (PermReq) – This ‘by permission only” restriction is in place for ECON401, ECON417, ECON432, ECON471, and ECON472 due to the advanced prerequisite required (econometrics).
  • ECON-BS Students
    • Any BA designated courses - Some restrictions apply to what classes students may request each semester. See the request form for complete details.
    • 400 level BS courses with 'Permission of BSOS-Economics Department' Restriction (PermReq) - This ‘by permission only' restriction is in place for ECON417, ECON432, and ECON471.

For additional details and to request permission to register for any of the above restricted ECON courses, visit: go.umd.edu/econcourserequest.

*The course request form is not for ECON386 (Experiential Learning), ECON396 (Honors Program), or ECON399/499 (Independent Study). Visit their respective webpage for more information.

Non-ECON Majors

The Department of Economics will grant non-ECON majors permission to register for ECON courses that are restricted to economics majors on the first day of the semester if all of the required prerequisites noted in the Schedule of Classes are complete and if the class is still open.

On the first day of the semester, non-ECON majors can email ECON advising (econadvising [at] umd [dot] edu) and an advisor will provide the necessary electronic stamp so that you can register or to join the wait list if the class is closed. Permission will not be granted prior to the first day of the semester and we do not permit oversubscriptions into full courses.

Note that majors only restrictions are not enforced for the Summer or Winter terms so non-ECON majors may register then for restricted ECON classes if all prerequisites are satisfied.
